Similar to Olympic disciplines for human athletes, the winning margins in the thoroughbred industry are very small.
In fact, there is a 0.3% difference between first and second place in racehorses and just a 1% improvement in performance can mean the horse placed fourth will then win 75% of the time (flat) and 50% of the time (NH).
